Bartlesville, Okla. -- Six of nine Lawrence hitters had multi-hit games as the Raiders routed Shawnee Mission South, 15-2, Friday in the first game of the Glenn Winget Legion Baseball Tournament.
"It seemed like everything we hit today was in a hole someplace and it was against probably one of the better pitchers we've faced," Lawrence coach Lee Ice said. "He struggled. We scored six runs in the first inning and ran him pretty early."
Jim Lewis led the way for Lawrence (17-7), going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Bix Ellenbecker was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Dustin Myers (3-for-4), Riley Scott (2-for-4), Matt Heider (2-for-4), and Cooper Chapin (2-for-4) also had multiple hits.
"We had a good day," Ice said. "Everything we hit -- everything we made contact with -- found a hole. Even with two strikes, we made contact and found a hole. We didn't strike out very much at all."
After scoring six runs in the bottom of the first, the Raiders pushed five more across in the second, coasting to a five-inning, run rule-shortened victory.
Matt Wiedeman held SM South to one unearned run on four hits in four innings while improving to 3-1.
"The first run we gave up, we got the first two outs on the first two pitches," Ice said. "Then there was an error and a base hit. I think the key for us was coming out after we scored six in bottom of the first and having a 1-2-3 top of the second."
Nick Wilcox belted his second home run of the season for Lawrence, which plays again at 1 p.m. today against Elk City, Okla.
"Normally, one of the tougher teams we face in this tournament is Shawnee Mission South," Ice said. "I assured our team that I wouldn't be surprised if we saw them again."
