Initial plans for two new grocery stores in northwest Lawrence will be up for review Wednesday by Lawrence-Douglas County planning commissioners.
Included on their meeting agenda:
- Consider a final development plan for a phase of Westgate Planned Commercial Development, which proposes a 48,055-square-foot Dillons store and parking lot to be located at the southeast corner of Sixth and Wakarusa. Submitted by Landplan Engineering for the property owners of record, Westgate L.C. and Dillons Stores.
- Consider a final development plan for a phase of Monterey Planned Commercial Development, which proposes development of a 68,000-square-foot Hy-Vee grocery store, a banking facility, and 32,700 square feet of additional retail space to be located at the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Monterey Way. Submitted by Landplan Engineering for Swan Management, the owner of record, and Hy-Vee Stores.
Both grocery companies announced plans for their new stores last month. Kansas-based Dillons would be opening its fourth store in Lawrence, while Iowa-based Hy-Vee would be opening its second in town.
Last month, both companies were planning to move full speed ahead. Dillons said it planned to have its store open late in 1999, while Hy-Vee planned to open its doors in early 2000.
