— Ottawa believed it had Augusta put away and an easy first-round win at the Baldwin Invitational boys basketball tournament in the bag.

That was until the Orioles' Scott Sayre decided to play Superman.

Sayre sank two fourth quarter three-pointers with less than three minutes remaining and led Augusta to a 51-49 win over OHS.

"Scott Sayre is a tremendous shooter and that was a very big point for us in the game," Augusta coach Bob Jackson said.

In other first-round games, host Baldwin fell to Jefferson West, 61-50, Atchison topped Anderson County, 67-49, and Wellsville defeated Basehor-Linwood, 58-50.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Ottawa held a 40-34 lead. After two-pointers from Mike Ward and Ben McClure tied the game at 41 apiece, the Cyclones hit a pair of jumpers to keep a four point lead with three minutes left.

But Sayre, who had missed on three previous attempts from three-point range, sank a trey to pull the Orioles within one, 45-44.

On Augusta's next possession, Sayre once again found his spot and swished a trey over a slumping Ottawa defense.

"We were getting tired at man-to-man, so we switched to a 2-3 zone and he got the first one," Ottawa coach David Grover said. "The second one we just didn't have good defensive pressure on him."

Augusta (5-3) will next face Atchison in the winner's side of the bracket and Ottawa (4-4) will face Anderson County in the consolation round.

Jeff West 61, Baldwin 50

Jefferson West's Bo Kobusziwski scored 20 points and Ryan Tenbrink added 14 as the Tigers downed Baldwin, 61-50.

Jeff West led 39-33 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but Kobusziwski caught fire. The Jeff West junior hit jumpers in three straight trips down the floor and scored nine of his 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Baldwin's Andy Meinen led the Bulldogs with 15 points as the host squad shot only 26 percent from field goal range.

"It really was the little things that made the difference tonight," Baldwin coach Bobby Taul said. Baldwin (4-5) will meet Basehor-Linwood in Friday's consolation round.
