Free State High's girls basketball team must have eaten its Wheaties since its previous meeting with Lawrence High.

The Firebirds muscled up and beat the Lions, 51-40, on Tuesday at the LHS gym to avenge an earlier defeat to their crosstown rival. The physical contest featured 39 fouls, a combined 50 free-throw attempts -- 28 in the fourth quarter-- and a coach's ejection.

"We wanted to come out and play harder," said FSHS senior guard Larissa Walker, who scored a game-high 15 points. "Last time (a 37-29 loss to LHS on Jan. 7) we didn't come out with any intensity. I'm a physical player. I guess I haven't been showing it much this season."

Walker showed it late in the fourth quarter when she and LHS junior TiCondra Glover scrambled for a ball. The Firebird collided with Glover, leaving the LHS guard dazed near midcourt. Free State guard Kristin Bock eventually scored on a layin during the possession and was fouled.

Meanwhile, LHS coach David Platt slammed a marker and stormed onto the court, wondering why the officials hadn't stopped play with Glover down. An official quickly called back-to-back technicals on Platt, leading to the coach's automatic ejection.

"I was just concerned about the safety of the girl," Platt said. "There's no excuse for getting out of the coach's box and onto the court." Bock made her foul shot and one of the four technical shots to hike Free State's lead to 47-35. The Firebird sophomore finished with 13 points, including seven in the final five minutes.

"Give them a lot of credit," Platt said. "They came out and played a physical game. We didn't adjust to the physical play."

The Firebirds snapped a three-game skid with the victory and improved to 4-6. LHS dropped to 4-6. The contest didn't count toward Sunflower League standings.

Free State managed to keep Somer Easterwood, the Lions' leading scorer in check. Easterwood, hobbled by an ankle injury and averaging 18 points through the first nine games, was held to a season-low eight points.

"We didn't do a good job of giving her the ball," Platt said. "She didn't do as good as job as usual presenting herself."

Turnovers also hurt LHS. The Lions committed 20 miscues and Free State capitalized.

"It was time for us to look at a whole lot more up-tempo game, baseline to baseline and put pressure on people," FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said. "It's helped us in terms of being aggressive offensively.

"In the first game with LHS, it was kind of like, `I dare you to shoot.' We tiptoed around. We can't afford to do that. We've got to have people make plays and take a chance."

LHS point guard Dani May scored a team-high 13 points. May's three-pointer with 3:53 left in the first half gave LHS a 16-14 advantage, the Lions' last lead. Free State took the lead for good on a conventional three-point play by senior Carrie Pohl with 3:14 left in the second quarter.

Pohl's free throw gave the Firebirds a 17-16 lead and they never looked back.

May said the Lions were pumped for the second meeting with Free State in 12 days.

"We were up for it," May said. "They were going after everything. They really wanted it and deserved it ... not that we didn't want it."

In the junior varsity contest, Lawrence beat Free State, 54-34. Jen Baum scored 14 points and Mandy Amyx 12 to boost LHS (5-6). Missy Garcia scored 10 points to pace the Firebirds (5-2).

LHS and Free State will both play in separate tournaments next week. The Lions will play in Emporia and Free State will travel to DeSoto.
