January 20, 1999

Profile: Evonne English, left over from last week. Well-known Baldwin artist. Considered by many to be the "No. 2" artist in town. Former teacher, too, and very involved with Lawrence art scene as well. (594-3774).

Other alternatives: George Malicky, former major league baseball player. In poor health at Baldwin Care Center. Probably better get him quick. Maybe better to do him for next week, instead of English. (Baldwin Care Center: 594-6492)

Suzi Gottstein: Baldwin baker deluxe, has business called Suzi's Cakes and Cookies. Made like four gillion cookies for Christmas activities. Also is a secretary at high school. (594-6649)

Christine Stegman: Supposedly has business started up making dog biscuits from different items in different shapes. Specialty type situation. She is also wife of local veterinarian and crazy about animals. (Not exactly sure on this one. 594-2424 is Hilltop vet clinic number. Can't find home phone.)

Olive Randel: Former high school librarian forever. Knows everyone. Interests in many things. Another one who's days are numbered. ( 594-6534 or try Orchard Lane Apartments 594-6996)

Other story suggestions:

Election time: Deadline to file is Jan. 26. So far, four have filed for school board and NONE for city council. Three spots opening up on council. Two encumbants have said (privately) they won't run and the third is an appointment by the Mayor and hasn't said whether she'll run. Could be a real fun story to do by checking with encumbants (Joe Salb, Jerry Roberts, Marilyn Pearse) as well as Mayor who is always ready to help out with a stupid quote or five. Do know of two possible candidates -- Gary Walbridge (formerly on council) and Scott Lauridsen (young guy for a change). School board names so far are: encumbants Barbara Johnson and Curtis Trarbach; newcomers Eugene Kivett and Betty Bullock. Chances are good that board president Roger Arnold will run again. Other incumbant, Mary Jane Chubb, has said she won't run for re-election. (side note: Blaine Cone from WorldWest may also be running.)

Charter School: Marcia Swenson, lead teacher, number listed is 594-2725 which is the high school. This is the first year for this program and not much is known about it by the general public (me included). They were at the Journal-World Tuesday on a field trip is why I was reminded of it.

Volunteer Fire Department: Chief is Allen Craig (594-3713). Story could go in many directions, but at least as a start what it's been like to have the new fire station and new truck.

Baldwin Bird Club. Active lot. Just completed data from Christmas bird count. Have info on hand, but could be expanded on by talking to Roger Boyd (Baker professor) who is big into it.

City council meeting Monday night, 7:30 p.m., Library. No agenda yet, but could be real interesting following Thursday meeting (see listing later) concerning budget and audit.

(Those are all items for L J-W).

I'll be working on:

City finance committee to meet Thursday afternoon concerning budget and/or audit process from last year. Could be heavy into Penni Porter nonsense. Should provide fodder for Monday's city council meeting.

Scouting program. Have photo on Webelo's activity last weekend. Will be trying to put more together.

Baldwin Briefs.
