The director of Kansas University's student union has been promoted to a new position putting him in charge of campus construction and maintenance, KU officials said Wednesday.

James Long, director of the Kansas and Burge unions for 15 years, will become assistant provost for facilities planning and management on Jan. 22.

His appointment centralizes management of the departments of facilities operations and of design and construction management.

The move was made after reassessing the administrative structure put in place several years ago by Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

The director of facilities operations has reported to Provost David Shulenburger while the director of construction management re-ported to Hemenway. Un-der the new alignment, Long will supervise both directors and report to the provost.

Long's task will be to coordinate employees responsible for campus upkeep and maintenance as well as the design, construction and planning of new buildings.

"This is a beautiful campus," Long said. "Ensuring that it remains beautiful, even as it continues to grow, presents a challenge that appeals to me."
