While there may be some sentimentality attached to the 20-plus-year-old buses that make up the bulk of the Lawrence Bus Co. fleet, there's another reason for their use: economics.
"It's not a fascination with old buses," argues Wayne Popp, who recently bought the business. "The old buses are more economical to run." And they're certainly more economical to purchase.
"It keeps the cost down, and that's good for everybody," he says. "Myself, I think it's kinda nice that we can recycle the older things."
The fleet is made up mainly of GMC buses, and keeping them going requires "four good mechanics and a very good preventive maintenance program."
