The Lawrence school district is charting a new course with a Futures Planning Conference.

Students, teachers, school administrators and community leaders are about to embark on a joint venture, one that will launch Lawrence public schools into the next century.

Some 100 individuals representing various sectors of the community will sit down together at a Futures Planning Conference later this month to set goals for education in Lawrence.

"The conference is a piece looking toward a whole in the future of the district," said Sandee Crowther, division director for evaluation and standards for the Lawrence school district. "What you're really looking for is common views and priorities."

The conference is scheduled for Jan. 21-23 at the Lawrence Holidome. Participants will confer in round-table discussions, facilitated by two outside consultants.

"We've started asking community people from various ethnic groups, people who have been in Lawrence various lengths of time and (people) of varied socioeconomic status," Crowther said. "We want to make sure we have all kinds of people."

There is no set agenda for what participants will discuss, Crowther said.

"Part of it is with (Supt.) Kathleen (Williams) being new, she wanted a sense of priorities of the district and the community," she said. "This should charter how we spend our money and our time."

It's also important for students to be involved in the process, Crowther said. Ten students from Lawrence junior high and high schools will also participate in the conference.

When the conference is over, principals, teachers, members of the Lawrence Education Assn. and administrators will determine when the ideas from the conference will be put into play in Lawrence schools, Crowther said.

"They will help shape how those (ideas) will become reality, which will dovetail with the curriculum audit," she said.

The district is scheduled to undergo a curriculum audit that will begin this month and end later this spring.
