What is the status of the investigation of the fire in the 1600 block of Tennessee that was being managed by First Management?

Fire investigators haven't received analysis reports from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which is testing samples taken from the house at 1605 Tenn. A dog trained to detect flammable substances used to start fires "hit" on several areas of the century-old house.

"We don't have the results back yet, so we don't have any confirmation (of arson) yet," Fire Marshal Rich Barr said. "They haven't been confirmed, but we believe they will show evidence, because the dog is pretty good."

The house received major structural damage on Aug. 25, and owners razed the building later that week.

Construction on the lot, owned by First Management's Doug Compton, continues. Compton plans to build five apartment buildings and a parking lot on the land.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical Chief Jim McSwain said the investigation is continuing and anyone with information should call fire officials at 832-7600.
