Why didn't Health Care Access ask to be included in the new Bert Nash/Health Department building across from the hospital? It would seem a natural to be located next to those health care providers.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Community Health Facility, in the 300 block of Maine, is scheduled to open in May. Health Care Access representatives directed questions to Kay Kent, director of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. Kent said original plans called for a renovation of Lawrence Memorial Hospital's 1928 and 1956 wings. Those areas now house the health department, Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. and Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, which will be moving into the new building this spring.

"We started down that path, and it became clear that this plan wouldn't handle what was needed for those agencies," Kent said.

The plans never included space for Health Care Access, which treats uninsured patients and is based at 1920 Moodie Rd.

"I believe Health Care Access also had wanted to maintain a location in east Lawrence," Kent said.
