On Feb. 22, 1899, the Lawrence Journal criticized fellow journalists noting: "The Kansas `editors' are off on a junketing trip today at the expense of Kansas City. There are more than two hundred in the crowd, and unless things have changed wonderfully, about one in ten is a sure-enough editor. The others are hangers on, men and women who make up in gall what they lack in brains, and who dead beat their way on the reputation of some man who is at home earning an honest living..."
