The Mount Oread Aerie No. 309 Eagles honored emergency services personnel and police on Sunday.
The local Eagles Club on Sunday honored a Lawrence firefighter and police officer, and in doing so offered a thank-you to all public servants.
The Mount Oread Aerie No. 309 chapter honored Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical firefighter Robert Stephen Smith with the Excellence in Fire Prevention award and Lawrence Police Officer Jay Bialek with the Reverence for Law award at the Sunday luncheon.
The two received plaques in front of an audience studded with police offices, firefighters and family.
"I'd like to say thank you to all the public servants here for a job you do every day," chapter president Rick Reeves said.
Past chapter president Claud Aubry introduced the honorees.
"Since 1979, Mount Oread Aerie No. 309 has recognized our local law enforcement and emergency service personnel," he said. "The recipients of today's awards were selected by their peers, supervisors and administrators in each department."
When Smith received his award, he thanked his fellow emergency workers.
"I can't accept this award alone. ... We're a team; we do everything together," he said.
Smith was described in a letter to the Eagles as "a firefighter who goes beyond the call of duty each and every day."
Bialek received the Reverence for Law award.
"I think we all go out there each and every day and give 100 percent as a team to make this community safe," he said.
