Olathe Olathe East opened with an 11-0 run and Lawrence High never fully recovered, losing 44-40 in a Sunflower League girls basketball contest on Friday night.
"You're never pleased with a loss," LHS coach David Platt said. "But we played hard, better defense and we were patient. We battled back in the fourth quarter to keep it close."
LHS trailed 15-5 in the second quarter before scoring 10 unanswered points to tie. The Hawks, though, never trailed and led 19-17 at halftime and 35-28 after three quarters.
LHS senior forward Somer Easterwood scored a game-high 21 points.
"She decided to come to play the last three quarters," Platt said. "TiCondra Glover did a nice job of getting her the ball. Dani May did a good job making sure we take care of the ball."
LHS (4-10) overall, 3-3 league) has lost six in a row. Four of those losses have been by five points or less.
O-East (9-5, 4-2) was led by Kara Savins' 19 points.
In the junior varsity contest, O-East rolled, 60-21. Jamie Rusk scored seven points to pace LHS.
Next for the Lions is a home league contest against Shawnee Mission Northwest on Monday.
