Run Lola Run

Starring Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtreu, Herbert Knaup, Armin Rohde, Joachim Krol and Nina Petri. Exhilarating movie-making, with a flame-haired Berliner charging across the city in a race against time. She has 20 minutes to find 100,000 marks, or her boyfriend will be dead. Cinematic, kinetic, playful and profound, the film teems with possibilities. In German with English subtitles (also available in a dubbed version). R.

American Pie

Starring Jason Biggs, Shannon Elizabeth, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eugene Levy. Coming-of-age comedy with the humor quotient of "Portnoy's Complaint," the raunch factor of "Porky's" and the sexual egalitarianism of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Gross but unexpectedly tender, too. R.

Summer of Sam

Starring Mira Sorvino, John Leguizamo, Jennifer Esposito, Anthony La Paglia, Adrien Brody and Ben Gazzara. Director Spike Lee's long, sledgehammer-style saga follows a bunch of New Yawkers through the blisteringly hot, out-of-control summer of '77, when David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz was killing and disco was king. Teeming with ethnic stereotypes and people yelling in each other's faces, the film is a pointless exercise in dark nostalgia. R.

The Adventures

of Elmo

in Grouchland

The voices of Kevin Clash, Caroll Spinney, Frank Oz, Mandy Patinkin and Vanessa Williams star in this tale of the furry red Muppet from "Sesame Street," who goes on a quest with his pals to retrieve his beloved blue blanket.
