Lawrence High School graduate Andrew K. Benton has been named president of Pepperdine University.

Benton's appointment was announced Wednesday morning by the Pepperdine Board of Regents in a faculty-student assembly on the university's Malibu, Calif., campus.

Benton was student government president at Lawrence High before graduating in 1970.

Benton's mother, Nelda, was delighted by the news of her son's appointment.

"Words can't express what I feel," Nelda Benton said. "This is what he wanted. We're so happy."

Nelda Benton and her husband, Darwin, live in Lawrence.

"He always liked to be a leader in whatever he decided to do," Nelda Benton said of her son.

Andrew Benton, 47, assumes the Pepperdine presidency July 1.

Benton has been executive vice president at Pepperdine since 1991. He has served in a variety of executive positions at the 8,000-student university since 1984.

He was assistant to the president of Oklahoma Christian University from 1975 to 1984. He earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree from Oklahoma Christian.

Benton and his wife, Deborah, live on Pepperdine's campus.

Benton replaces David Davenport, a 1977 graduate of the Kansas University School of Law.
