Gravino, Winter

boost Firebirds

Junction City -- Junior Laura Gravino went 4-0 in her Free State High tennis debut, winning the No. 1 singles portion of the Junction City Invitational on Saturday.

Gravino, a Lawrence High transfer who placed third at state last year, didn't drop a game in pool play and beat Manhattan's Cheen Alkatib, 8-4, in the final. It was a rematch of last year's third-place match at state.

"One she found her groove, her steady and relentlessly aggressive play simply wore down her opponent," FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. "This was a good, solid way for Laura to start the season."

Firebird senior Molly Winter finished second at No. 2 singles for her best-ever tourney placing. She won her matches in pool play, 8-4, 8-0, 8-6. McPherson's Callie Crist beat Winter, 8-3, in the final.

"Our singles play was outstanding," Renberger said.

Both Free State doubles teams placed fifth. Kim Heck and Susie Epp were the Firebirds' No. 1 team. Katie Bushouse and Kylie Renberger were the No. 2 team. Free State placed third overall behind McPherson and Shawnee Heights.
