A veterans official wants area vets to know a Lawrence office can assist them in getting through the paperwork in a variety of programs.

"We fill out lots of forms and help them understand VA benefits," said Evan Vernon, veterans service representative for the local office of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs.

Vernon said that because of recent news stories on Veterans Affairs and benefits, he wanted to be sure local vets knew that Lawrence services were available for them.

"We do the detail work, we're the detail experts, you might say," he said.

The office can assist veterans with various forms, and help them to receive benefits for several programs, Vernon said.

"In a lot of cases, they can come here, instead of having to go to Topeka or Leavenworth," he said.

The office is in the Douglas County Senior Services building, Eighth and Vermont.

It is open from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The office's telephone number is 843-5233.
