A convicted child rapist will remain jailed after a judge on Thursday postponed sentencing for a second time.

Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone agreed to continue sentencing for 30-year-old Lawrence resident Jeffery L. Campbell while attorneys wait for psychological reports, but Malone said that he won't do it a third time.

"I don't want to continue this matter again," Malone said.

Campbell pleaded guilty in May to raping and sodomizing his stepdaughter and no contest to the attempted rape of a 19-year-old woman.

Lawrence police arrested Campbell in late January after a family member reported the stepdaughter's abuse. Court documents say the abuse took place between Sept. 1 and Dec. 1 of last year.

Campbell was out of custody on $35,000 bond in April when he tried to rape a woman with whom he was living.

Defense attorney James Rumsey has filed a motion to depart from sentencing guidelines based on psychological information, and has requested notes from the psychologist who examined Campbell for the state.

Malone gave Rumsey and Douglas County Assistant Dist. Atty. Rick Trapp several possible dates for sentencing and asked them to settle on a day as soon as possible.
