A Topeka man has been sentenced to 31 1/2 years in federal prison, without parole, for six robberies of area businesses, including the Lawrence Pizza Company and Shark's Surf Shop in Lawrence.
Shawn E. Stewart, 26, was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Sam Crow in federal court in Topeka, U.S. Atty. Jackie Williams' office said Thursday.
Stewart also was sentenced to three years' supervised probation following his prison sentence and ordered to pay $10,157 in restitution.
Stewart on Feb. 2 pleaded guilty to robbing at gunpoint the Lawrence Pizza Company, 601 Kasold, on Aug. 23, 1998, and Shark's Surf Shop, 813 Mass., on Sept. 1, 1998.
He also pleaded guilty to robbing four Topeka restaurants: Boss Hawg's Barbeque, Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers, Paisano's Restaurante and Sonic Drive-In, between June and September 1998.
Topeka police arrested Stewart on Sept. 4, 1998, about 30 minutes after he reportedly robbed the Sonic wearing a Halloween mask.
Stewart originally was charged with several counts of robbery in Douglas and Shawnee counties, before he was indicted by a federal grand jury.
