Three veteran librarians competing for the job of library dean at Kansas University will be on campus for interviews.

Finalists for library dean at Kansas University are undergoing campus interviews to aid selection of a new leader for a far-flung system with 3.2 million volumes and a $14 million budget, KU officials said Tuesday.

Hiring a new dean became necessary when William Crowe decided to leave the job to become the official librarian at KU's Kenneth Spencer Research Library.

The three finalists are:

  • Keith Russell, deputy director of the National Agriculture Library in Beltsville, Md. His public presentation was Monday in the Kansas Union.
  • Sarah Watstein, director of academic user services at J.B. Cabell Library at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. Her talk is at 10 a.m. Monday in Alderson Auditorium, Kansas Union.
  • Barbara Dewey, director of information and research services for libraries at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Her presentation will be at 3:30 p.m. May 5 in Spencer Auditorium, Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art.

Susan Craig, a library dean search committee member and head of KU's art and architecture library, said she would withhold judgment on the finalists until all interviewed on campus. There's only so much that can be gleaned from reading visas and reviewing references, she said.

"What we're looking for is someone who is going to lead the library," she said. "That requires not only paper qualities but a personality match.

"We've got three strong candidates. We've got to see what their interests are, their strengths and how they match."

Collections in the KU libraries contain 3.2 million volumes and 27,000 current serial titles in seven library facilities in Lawrence. The dean is responsible for a budget of $14 million and a staff of 71 library faculty and professional staff, 76 paraprofessionals and the equivalent of 80 full-time student workers.

Candidates are required to have a master's degree and a minimum of five years of senior administrative experience in an academic research library.
