A poison control center was opened at Lawrence Memorial Hospital under the leadership of pediatric physician Vern Branson. The local center was only one of eight in the state.

Kansas University received its largest research contract to date, $156,800, from the Atomic Energy Commission, to continue high-pressure chemistry under the direction of Paul Gilles.
