Remember Tuesday night when Lawrence was mentioned on the ABC-TV police series "NYPD Blue"? Well, here's the scoop on the Lawrence connection to the show.
In 1990, Lawrence residents Larry Sinks, Wes Kabler, Gary Bartz, Lanny Riedel and Gene Shaughnessy went to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, according to Sinks and Shaughnessy. Dick Schaap, a television sports commentator and friend of Sinks', invited them to his Super Bowl party, where they met Bill Clark, the detective who solved the Son of Sam murder case and now works as a consulting producer for "NYPD Blue."
That meeting led to Sinks and Shaughnessy getting parts as extras on an "NYPD" episode titled "The Heist." During the shoot, Sinks was able to persuade Dennis Franz, who plays Det. Andy Sipowicz on the show, to help him propose to his future wife, Carrie.
The episode was filmed in December 1994, Shaughnessy said, and the Lawrence men were invited to a Christmas party hosted by Steven Bochco, the show's writer. The episode aired in February 1995.
Sinks also made an appearance later on the detective show -- but in name only. The writers gave his name to a pimp.
