Vice President Gerald Ford, the replacement for the resigned Spiro Agnew, said President Nixon should have tried harder to get the Watergate scandal story out sooner and that Nixon should cooperate as fully as possible to clear the air. The new vice president's remarks startled some, but friends said that was the type of person the former congressman was: "Forthright, objective and honest."
