To the editor:

I helped chaperone 127 Lawrence Free State High School band members on a four-day trip to Winter Park, Colo., this past weekend. The students competed in the Winter Park Ski Music Festival. As a chaperone and parent of one of the band students, I would like to tell the town of Lawrence how proud they should be of these students.

The students received three first-place trophies and a runner-up trophy. Three of the four bands received plaques for their superior ratings, and one of our students, Barrett Hamilton, received the award for the best trombonist from all the jazz groups in competition. Those of us who have had opportunities to hear the Free State bands were not surprised by all these awards.

The students were also ladies and gentlemen throughout the entire trip. Strangers commented to Avian Bear, band director, how polite, well-behaved and well-mannered the students were. The town of Lawrence and Lawrence Free State High School were well represented by these outstanding high school students. Fight on Firebirds.
