SM East stops

Free State, 3-1

Overland Park -- Free State High's soccer team fell to No. 1-ranked Shawnee Mission East, 3-1, on Wednesday at SM Soccer Complex. Missy Garcia scored unassisted for FSHS.

"They are No. 1 in the state, but we were not totally outplayed," coach Phil Lee said of the 7-0-2 Lancers. "Missy's goal gave us the first lead in Free State history. We broke the ice. We did play really well. We worked the ball well into the wings and center.

"Their third goal, their only goal in the second half came off a midfield mistake. Their first goal hit the post and caromed in. The second one went off the crossbar and banged in."

The Firebirds were on top for about 30 minutes, then trailed 2-1 at halftime.

Kristin Bock and Garcia played well in the midfield, Lee said. Lauren Wilkinson and Julie Siedel had strong games at sweeper and right back respectively. Anna Forman and Anne Buhler showed great improvement, Lee noted.

Free State, 0-5-1, will meet Washburn Rural at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Rural's field.

Free State's JV fell, 6-0.
