Sooner or later, the Kansas University athletics department will have to pony up $45,174.
That's the amount the NCAA will dun each Big 12 Conference school to help pay the $54.5 million it owes former restricted earnings coaches.
Where will the $45,000-plus come from?
"We don't know," KU athletics director Bob Frederick said Wednesday. "First of all, we don't know when we have to pay it, so I'm not sure."
A loan program has been proposed to permit schools to pay over a period of time, but Frederick doesn't know if Kansas would take advantage of that option, if it's available.
"It would depend on when the payments are due," he said, "and what the interest rates are."
Frederick estimates Kansas had about 15 coaches who fell under the restricted-earnings category, and who will be entitled to the NCAA payments.
