Standish, Hemphill

win for city swimmers

Kansas City, Mo. -- Free State High junior Caitlin Standish and Lawrence High freshman Andrea Hemphill won Saturday at the Mo-Kan Invitational swim meet at Central High School.

Standish won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.30. Hemphill won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.39.

Hemphill also placed third in the 100 freestyle (54.81).

The city produced two second-place finishers. Lawrence High's Kim Miller was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.83) and Free State's Kelli Criswell in the 200 freestyle (1:57.96).

LHS sophs sweep

SM North in baseball

Lawrence High's sophomore baseball team swept Shawnee Mission North, 9-8 and 18-8, on Saturday at Youth Sports Inc. fields.

Chad Lisher and Mike Morrell hit home runs in the first game. Lisher and Chris Johnson had two hits. Casey Rahmeier was the wining pitcher.

Jason Fry hit two home runs, while John Gammill, Kevin Jacob and Tyler Crotts added home runs. Jacob had two hits. Nick Hirschey was the winner.

LHS, 5-1, will meet SM East at 4:15 p.m., Tuesday at YSI.

Lion JV drops two

Leavenworth swept Lawrence High's junior varsity baseball team, 8-4 and 15-5, on Friday at Ice Field. Derrick Wallace went 3-for-4 in the first game. Shane Hodgson went 2-for-3 in the second game for LHS, 0-6.
