Lawrence High socked Shawnee Mission North in a Sunflower League baseball doubleheader sweep on Saturday at windy Ice Field.
The Lions (4-2) won the opener, 5-2, and the nightcap, 14-9, for their first sweep of the season following two splits. LHS has played four games in three days.
"It was big for us," LHS coach Dirk Wedd said of the two victories over the Indians (1-5). "The weather conditions were so tough to play in. Our pitchers did a good job of keeping the ball in the park the first game.
"In the second game, the hitters stepped up. We knew there were going to be runs."
Senior Nick Wilcox ignited LHS in the first game with a three-run home run in the bottom of third inning. Junior Blake Allen clubbed a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to drive in the Lions' final two runs.
Junior Nolan Samuels went 2-for-4 with a double and senior Bruce Dickson went 2-for-3 for the Lions, who collected eight hits.
Lenny Ferrington was the winning pitcher with relief from Dickson and Rob Etken.
"We had so many kids contribute," Wedd said. "Our pitchers threw well to hold them with the wind blowing out. They had good comannd of the strike zone."
In the second game, LHS collected 16 hits -- seven for extra-bases.
LHS junior Curtis Ledbetter led the slugfest. He went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBIs.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lawrence's Dustin Myers blasted a three-run homer to provide the Lions with a commanding 13-8 advantage. Myers went 3-for-3 with five RBIs.
Jon Murray went 3-for-4 with two doubles and knocked in two runs for the Lions.
Riley Scott was the winning pitcher. Ryan Julian and Brandon Bingham provided relief.
Next for the Lions is a doubleheader against Shawnee Mission East on Tuesday at Ice Field. The first game is slated for 4:15 p.m.
