April 11, 1999

On April 11, 1899, the Lawrence Journal reported "The news that the Lawrence company of the Twenty-third Kansas would be here in the afternoon yesterday was posted on the Journal bulletin board shortly before 3 o'clock, and it did not take long for it to spread all over town, and a big crowd gathered at the depot as a result." The Journal noted regarding this company of black soldiers that had been sent to Cuba that "The restraints of army life rested lightly on the fellows who had just been mustered out, and they were so glad to get back to Lawrence that they were not willing to 'fall in' and march to the place where the festivities were to occur, but many hurried to greet friends and relatives, and were soon lost in the crowds."
