Olathe Lawrence High senior Mike Samp carded an even-par 71 round on Wednesday to lead the LHS golfers to fifth place at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational at Heritage Park.
Samp, Shawnee Mission South's Alex Montgomery and Byron Shultz all shot 71s. Montgomery was awarded first placed on the tiebreaker.
"There were an awful lot of good scores today," LHS coach Ron Commons said of the Lions' season opener. "The weather was really nice, they moved some of the tees up and it made was a fairly short course. It was ideal for golf."
Samp's round included four birdies and four bogeys.
Samp, Ryan Morgan (75), Spencer Wilson (78) and Ty Gittins (84) figured in the Lions' team total of 318. Host SM South won with 298 strokes.
In Lawrence's junior varsity tournament at Gardner, sophomore Mark Frederick was the second medalist with a 78.
