Pizza Hut's sixth Lawrence store will join Blockbuster Entertainment Inc.'s second in a new development in northwestern Lawrence.
According to plans announced earlier by Wichita developer Walter Morris and Son, Blockbuster will open its 4,250-square-foot video rental store this summer.
Pizza Hut is near signing a lease to occupy another 2,400 square feet in the same strip development. That will leave another 1,400 square feet to be leased there.
David Hickman of CB Richard Ellis in Kansas City, Mo., said there was interest from other major national retailers for the remaining space in the 8,050-square-foot building now nearing completion just east of the Arby's store at 4671 W. Sixth.
The new Pizza Hut would be the chain's sixth Lawrence store. Blockbuster has operated a video store at 1516 W. 23rd since 1990.
The project is part of a major retail development stretching southeast of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive in fast-growing northwest Lawrence. The area is part of a commercial subdivision being developed by Mastercraft Corp. of Lawrence and owned by Westgate LLC.
Dillon Food Stores and Gregg Tire Co. are building new stores there, a convenience store is slated to be built west of Dillons, and other projects are in the works.
According to development plans on file at city hall, the area will include more than 200,000 square feet of space when fully developed.
