Lawrence High's boys golf team opens its season today at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational at Heritage Park, which will also be the Lions' destination in late May.
Heritage Park will be the site for the Class 6A state tournament on May 24.
"Hopefully we'll get to finish there," LHS coach Ron Commons said.
High expectations run rampant at LHS with five of its top six golfers back from last year's fifth-place team at state.
Senior Mike Samp (80), sophomore Brett Buxton (81) and senior Ty Gittins (82) cracked the top 20 at state to lead the Lions a year ago. Ehren Guntert, also part of the Lions' postseason team, is a senior.
Junior Ryan Morgan, who shot a 70 at last year's Lawrence Invitational and was the Lions' top regional performer, is currently playing No. 1 for the Lions.
"There are several others right behind pushing him," Commons said. "That's why we're anxious to get some tournaments under our belt and get an opportunity to play some different golf courses."
Since practices started on March 1, the Lions have experienced three different courses. They're sharing time with Free State at Alvamar, Lawrence Country Club and Eagle Bend.
"We've worked out a rotational schedule so we're able to practice throughout the week at Alvamar, Lawrence CC and Eagle Bend," said Commons, entering his 24th season as LHS golf coach. "That seems to be a benefit at this stage of our season. The true measure of that will be how well we do throughout the season and where we end.
LHS will play twice in Lawrence this spring. The Sunflower League tournament is slated for May 3 at Lawrence CC. The annual Lawrence Invitational, which has 25 teams entered, is May 13 at Alvamar.
