A Lawrence doctor was honored recently by the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Donald Hatton has received the Laureate Award by the Kansas chapter of the American College of Physicians -- American Society of Internal Medicine.

``I've supported the actions of the college since I was a resident,'' Hatton said. ``Realizing that I'd been there a long time, I wasn't too surprised.''

But he was honored.

``It's an honor. ... They had an awards ceremony and gave me a nice plaque and a nice medallion,'' he said. Both are in his office, of course.

Hatton said he learned he had been named for the award in late summer. The banquet was recently held in Overland Park.

The award, one of two service awards the organization presents, is given to longtime members who show a commitment to excellence in medical care, education, research and community service. The other service award is for excellence in teaching.

Hatton practices general internal medicine with the Reed Medical Group. He came to Lawrence in 1974 after his residency at the Kansas University Medical Center. He has served as president of the Kansas Medical Society and on two United Way boards. He serves on the boards of the Kansas Medical Mutual Insurance Co. and Heartland Health Insurance Co.
