An electrical short in a television put two people out of their homes Thursday night.
The short started a fire in the north half of a duplex at 515 Ind., damaging that apartment, Fire Battalion Chief Jerry Karr said.
A neighbor saw flames in the front room and called emergency personnel at 5:34 p.m. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical reached the duplex at 5:38, and had the fire under control by 5:45, Karr said.
``The cause was an electrical short in a television set,'' Karr said. The fire burned the television, television stand and carpet; heat and smoke damage to the apartment was estimated at $5,000.
No one was at home when the fire started; firefighters had to force the door open.
``The fire was right at the front of the house and right by the doors,'' Karr said, so it was quickly controlled.
There was no apparent structural damage, Karr said. Neither resident of the duplex was staying there Thursday night; the resident of the north apartment will be displaced, Karr said.

The Lawrence Woodwind Quintet will perform at 6:30 p.m. today at Vermont Towers, 1101 Vt.
The program will include works by Handel, LeFebvre, Haydn, Scott Joplin and Cambini, the first composer to write for a woodwind quintet.
The concert is open to the public.
The quintet also will perform at the retirement party for Emily Dahlem, the city's executive secretary who is retiring after 26 years with the city. The event is scheduled at 7 p.m. Monday in the Adams Alumni Center.'

for `Wise Women'
Kansas City, Mo. -- The Civic Opera Theater of Kansas City will hold auditions for Conrad Susa's ``The Wise Women'' at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9400 Nall.
Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a classical selection and bring a current resume/biography. An accompanist will be provided.
Charles Bruffy and Linda Ade Brand will be music director and stage director, respectively. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Dec. 4 and 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, 14th and Broadway.
