Free State High rallied to defeat Olathe South, 3-2, in a boys soccer match here Thursday. It was the Firebirds' first win after seven losses.

Todd Rahan scored twice and Jesse Ens scored once for Free State, and James Moore had an assist for the Firebirds. Ens scored the winning goal with 3:45 remaining.

``It was a good all-around effort, which is what we've been working for. We talked about making this a turning point. The guys are really happy about the victory.''

Firebird volleyball

goes 2-1 at Aquinas

Overland Park -- Free State High went 2-1 in a volleyball quadrangular Thursday night at Overland Park Aquinas. The Firebirds defeated Blue Valley North, 15-3, 15-13, and Olathe North, 15-6, 15-2, but fell to Aquinas, 15-3, 14-16, 15-9.

The Firebirds' record moved to 4-2. They will play in the Johnson County Invitational on Saturday at Johnson County Community College.

Phlegar finishes seventh

Overland Park -- Free State's Lauren Phlegar shot a 40 to finish in seventh place in the Aquinas Invitational on Thursday at Overland Park Golf Course. Lawrence High finished 11th in the team standings. Free State didn't field a full team. Leslie Short's score of 50 was tops for the Lions.

Aquinas tops Central, 8-6

Overland Park Aquinas tripped Central, 8-6, in junior high football on Thursday at Central's field. T.C. Clark scored on a 15-pass from Daniel Dulin in the fourth quarter, but a two-point conversion try failed. Dulin also had a 30-yard punt return and an interception. Damien Patton also had an interception. Central, 0-3, will meet Topeka High next Thursday in Topeka.

Lions JV soccer wins

Jason Colwell's goal, assisted by Randy Baum, lifted Lawrence High to a 1-0 junior varsity soccer victory over Leavenworth on Thursday at YSI. Mike Bateman recorded the shutout in goal. The Lions improved to 1-4.

Eudora High's Stein

wins McLouth race

McLouth -- Eudora High's Jessa Stein won the McLouth Invitational cross country championship on Thursday. Stein finished the two-mile race in 12:30.

As a team, Eudora tied for third. Led by Heidi Yost's fifth-place finish, Perry-Lecompton tied Midway-Highland for first place with 61 points.

Oskaloosa's Kris Cannon placed third in the boys race. Eudora led all area teams with a fifth-place boys finish. Results in scoreboard.

Wellsville wins CC title

Allen -- Wellsville claimed the boys team championship at the Northern Heights cross country invitational on Thursday. Brad Kramer won the 3.1 mile race in 17;59.5.
