East Lawrence is getting some help getting a facelift.
The Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing announced five Metropolitan Community Capacity Building Grants, totaling $112,500, on Monday. Lawrence is receiving $15,000 for a East Lawrence neighborhood revitalization plan.
"The grants will help these communities determine the best investments for their futures and lay the groundwork for obtaining assistance from other resources," Lt. Gov. Gary Sherrer said.
The East Lawrence plan will establish guidelines for in-fill housing, rehabilitation of houses and development of a conservation overlay district, coordinated with the East Lawrence Improvement Assn.
Tonganoxie will also receive $15,000. The grant will help develop growth management and wastewater management plans.
The grants are earmarked for neighborhood revitalization, inter-jurisdictional planning and growth management plans. Other cities receiving money include Topeka, $15,000; Westwood, $15,000; and four neighborhoods in Wichita, $52,500.
The grants are given annually through the Economic Development Initiatives Fund, which uses lottery proceeds.
