Lawrence High, ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, is in position to qualify its entire boys cross country team for next week's state meet at Rim Rock Farm.

The Lions will run at the 10-team regional on Saturday at Warner Park in Manhattan. The first four teams and top five individuals of non-qualifying teams will advance to state.

The boys will run a five-kilometer race at 3 p.m. The girls' two-mile race starts at 2:30 p.m.

"Our guys are probably the top ranked team in there," LHS coach Rusty Powlas said. "There's going to be some tough teams there. Wichita Heights is ranked (fifth)."

Lawrence's regional team will consist of Chris Williams, Nathan Rahmeier, Eli Allen, Jonathan Hemphill, Justin Riley, D.J. Hilding and Adam Beals. Williams has won six of seven races this fall and is the defending state champion.

Representing the LHS girls at regional will be Andrea Hemphill, Elise Schnose, Stacey Urban, Megan Rahmeier, Jamie Bronoski, Kristy Young and Sarah Butler.

Free State's boys team will be led by Ariel Ludwig, Aaron Paul, Chris White, Ian McDonald, Jason Jenny and Justin White. The Firebirds girls squad is anchored by Sarah Underwood, Jamie Mitchell, Heather McCullough, Betsy Lee, Laura Gagnon, Susan Hesse and Mackenzie McBride.

Free State, 5A a year ago, will also run at the Manhattan regional.

Other teams at the regional are Emporia, Junction City, Kansas City Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Manhattan, Topeka, Topeka Washburn Rural and Wichita Heights.
