I've been listening to commuters talk about the horrible repair job that has been done on Kansas Highway 10 east of Lawrence. Was anyone actually paid to do that? Can anything be done to make that road any better? It will be terrible to travel on this winter.

Kansas Department of Transportation spokesperson Kim Athon said she needed more information about the exact location of the problem to be able to answer the question definitively. But she did say crews filled in wheel ruts about two weeks ago about three miles east of Lawrence on K-10. The work was a temporary fix, and an asphalt seal is planned in the spring from the east city limits of Lawrence to the Johnson-Douglas County line.

How many of the original Beach Boys are left in the band?

When Mike Love performs today with a group billed as the Beach Boys or ``American Band Featuring Members of the Beach Boys,'' he is the only original member who was there in 1961 when the group formed in Hawthorne, Calif. The original fivesome consisted of Love, Al Jardine and the brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson.

Love's group includes two early Beach Boys: David Marks, who replaced Jardine from 1962 to 1963, and Bruce Johnston, who toured in place of Brian Wilson beginning in 1965.

During the 1997 Beach Boys tour, Love, Jardine and Carl Wilson performed together. Wilson, who was replaced by Marks during the tour because of health problems, died of cancer in February at age 51. Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983.

Jardine is reportedly putting together his own ``Beach Boys: Friends and Family'' tour. Brian Wilson continues to record and perform occasionally on his own.
