Eagle Bend eagle: Travis Engle fired a hole-in-one on the par-3, 160-yard No. 13 hole at Eagle Bend on Wednesday. Engle's 8-iron shot was witnessed by Craig Jones and Jim Roberts.

Rebels Tryouts: Kansas Rebels U-18 girls softball team will hold a tryout from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 25 at Sport2Sport. For information, call Kristy Asher at 842-2940 or Ron Goodwin at 843-4662.

  • Cornell Honors Baker: Danika Baker, a senior from Lawrence, has been named recipient of the Maaske Award at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The award recognizes athletes who in their junior year lettered in two or more sports and accumulated the highest grade-point average. Baker, a 1995 Lawrence High graduate, lettered in golf and softball while earning a 3.6 GPA.

  • Heitzman Takes Five Golds: Paul Heitzman of Eudora was the overall winner in both the 5K (18:49) and 10K (34:02) at the Kansas Senior Olympics last week in Topeka. Heitzman also won three races in the 65-69 age group -- the 400-, 800- and 1500-meter events.

  • Harjo's Medal Haul: Scotty Harjo of Lawrence claimed a bucketful of medals at the Kansas Senior Olympics last week in Topeka. Harjo played on the gold medal teams in basketball, softball and volleyball. He also won a silver medal in basketball free-throw shooting and a bronze in bowling doubles with Clifford Metzger of Salina. In track, Harjo won a silver medal in the long jump and bronzes in the discus and shot put.

  • Talley Shoots Hole-in-One: Harry Talley of Lawrence used a six-iron to ace the 135-yard No. 2 hole at Alvamar Country Club on Wednesday. Witnesses were Jim Black, Ron Olsen and Jim Gunn.

  • JGC Four-Ball Winners: The team of Darrin Pearson, Kent Morgison, Les Brown and Ben Overman fired a 66 for low gross in the Jayhawk Golf Club four-ball tournament last Sunday. Runner-up was the team of John Shafer, Kent Beisner, Ron Shaver and Kyle Beisner with a 69. In net, the winners were Jim Currier, Don Schulenberg, Larry Whiteley and Roger Gemeinhardt who combined for a 59.

  • Shepleys Flight Champs: Sam and Vickie Shepley of Lawrence finished first in net in the third flight of the Winfield Couples Invitational golf tournament earlier this month. The Shepleys shot a 123 and won their flight by five strokes.

  • Lake Perry Hole-in-One: Don Daniels used an eight-iron to ace the par-three, 125-yard No. 5 hole at Lake Perry CC last Sunday. Witnesses were Don Brentz, Ray Brentz and Jesse Longoria.
