If you want to do something for the community during the holidays, there are still chances to get involved.

During the Thanksgiving week, several agencies need donations or volunteers.

ECKAN needs help sorting donations and deliveries. Monday and Tuesday, the agency will need help sorting donations and boxing up food for families. On Wednesday and Thursday morning, volunteers will be needed to deliver Thanksgiving food boxes.

"We put more than just the Thanksgiving meal in there," she said. "We put in enough for a few days."

Donations are always welcome, especially Christmas and Thanksgiving foods.

"We could always use donations," Eve Cofer said. "We've been hit heavy for Thanksgiving. ...We're still soliciting clothes and food."

Anyone interested in helping can call 841-3357. Donations may be left at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., or at the ECKAN offices at 1600 Haskell, Suite 197.

The Salvation Army still needs turkeys and trimmings for holiday food baskets, to distribute early this week. It also needs volunteers to help run its shelter on Thanksgiving, as well as serve the evening snack.

If Thanksgiving is too busy, there are still lots of opportunities in December. The Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030, lists volunteer opportunities with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Toys for Tots and ECKAN.

Cofer said ECKAN is still looking for people to adopt families and senior citizens for Christmas, providing them with food and gifts.
