Using a license plate number, Lawrence police tracked down one of two Lawrence men suspected of breaking into the home of a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy while he was asleep.

Shane J. White, 20, was expected to appear in Douglas County District Court at 3 p.m. today to answer to charges of aggravated burglary, conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, theft of more than $500 but less than $25,000, and criminal damage to property.

Police tracked White through tag information gleaned from witnesses at the scene. Detectives questioned him Wednesday and took him into custody that afternoon.

Between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Nov. 4, two burglars climbed through the window of the deputy's eastern Lawrence home and took a wedding ring, a stereo, speakers, a 12-gauge shotgun, a video-game console and a bulletproof vest. The vest was later found in the yard, where the burglars apparently dropped it.

Total losses were pegged at more than $2,000. It was unclear Wednesday how much of the goods had been recovered.

Police on Thursday continued to search for the second suspect. Spokesman Sgt. George Wheeler said the suspect had been identified but not yet located.
