The remaining two of five friends arrested for robbing two liquor stores and a fast food restaurant in January pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges, ensuring they will go to prison.
Anthony T. Vann, 21, pleaded guilty Monday to carrying a gun during the Jan. 19 robbery of Spirit Liquor, 600 Lawrence.
Andre D. Newman, 20, pleaded guilty to robbing Spirit Liquor on the same day and robbing Koleber Retail Liquor, 1805 W. Second, on Jan. 15. Newman also pleaded guilty to carrying a gun during the Spirit Liquor robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.
Vann faces a mandatory five years in prison without parole. Newman faces a maximum of 40 years in prison for the two robberies, a mandatory five years for carrying the gun and up to 20 years for the conspiracy charge.
They will be sentenced at 9 a.m. March 11, 1999, in Topeka.
Newman also planned another Lawrence liquor-store robbery with Chaz Green and Matthew Headley on Jan. 19, according to press release from the U.S. Attorney's office in Wichita. They attempted to rob Linda's Liquors, 3032 Iowa, and also cased out Cork & Barrel Wine & Spirits, 1410 Kasold, and the Spirit Liquor store before staging the Spirit Liquor robbery.
Green, 18, of Lawrence pleaded guilty on June 22 to using a gun in connection with the Koleber robbery and also pleaded guilty to robbery in the Spirit Liquor case. Green's sentencing will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 23.
Headley, 22, Lawrence, pleaded guilty in September to robbing Taco John's, 1101 W. Sixth, on Jan. 7. He also pleaded guilty to robbing Spirit Liquor. He's set for sentencing at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 12.
Willie D. Paul pleaded guilty on July 21 to robbing Koleber Retail Liquor. He will be sentenced at 11 a.m. Dec. 4.
The robbers were charged under the Hobbs Act, which makes it a federal crime to affect or obstruct interstate commerce by robbery.
