Free State High's volleyball team was rewarded for its Sunflower League championship, placing three players on the all-league first team.

The Firebirds who were honored were junior setter Alison Lungstrum, senior setter Mariana Zylstra and senior hitter Jamie Morningstar.

Free State junior hitter Sarah Graves and junior defensive specialist Alexis Bliss were named to the second team, and senior hitters Christina McVay and Larissa Walker received honorable mention.

Lawrence High sophomore setter Ashley Bechard, senior hitter Esther Magnuson and junior defensive specialist Kayla Dreiling made the all-league second team. LHS senior Holly Kerbel received honorable mention.

KU's Sell falls

Salt Lake City -- Anousjka Van Exel of Tulsa defeated Kansas senior Kris Sell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, in the singles final at the ITA Central Region tennis championships on Sunday. Sell finished the fall season 14-5.

Logan dumps West

Topeka -- Topeka Logan upended West, 64-48, in city ninth-grade girls basketball on Monday at Logan. Julie Seidel led the Warhawks with 14 points. Amy Vormehr and Carrie Skahan each scored 10 for West (1-2).

South stops Trail

Olathe -- South Junior High's ninth grade girls basketball team defeated Olathe Indian Trail, 44-32, on Monday. Mandy Amyx scored 16 points, Hallie Fitzgerald 13 for South. South, 4-2, will meet West today at South. Indian Trail won the B-game, 14-12.


Due to a difficult-to-read jersey number, West's Chris Heath was misidentified in a Toy Bowl picture on page 3C of Monday's Journal-World.
