On Nov. 10, 1898, the Lawrence World editorialized in the wake of the Republican victory: "Here is a prediction. There have never will be another national contest along the lines of free silver. The people have tired of that and will go back to something more substantial. The republicans, of course, if allowed to choose will go to the country on the tariff question. The longer we live the more we are impressed that the tariff is the question of the day. The only wonder about it is that everybody is not a protectionist."
