— Ron Warner, a seventh-round draft pick from Kansas, was activated by the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday.

Warner, a linebacker, had been on the Saints' injured list since Aug. 25. He had undergone surgery for a knee injured in a college all-star game.

Baker blanks Jewell

Baldwin -- Baker defeated William Jewell, 2-0, in the Heart of America Conference soccer semifinals on Wednesday. Erik Jones and Dave D'Ercole scored, while Bruce Rose and Mike McCabe had assists.

Sean Brown recorded the shutout for BU, 13-5-2. The Wildcats will entertain an undetermined foe in the finals on Friday.

West tumbles, 45-41

Susie Epp scored 13 points in West Junior High's 45-41 ninth-grade girls basketball loss to Topeka Northern Hills on Wednesday. In the B game, West's Lindsay Baxter hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lift the Warhawks to a 27-26 victory.

South tops Central

South defeated Central, 43-28, in junior high girls basketball Wednesday at Central. Mallory Richardson scored 10 points for Central. South won the B game, 26-12. Central (0-3) will play at Southwest on Tuesday.

KU netters win

Salt Lake City -- Kansas' Lisa Mallaiah, Monica Sekulov and Christi Wagenaar won first-round matches Wednesday at the ITA Central Regional championship qualifying tournament. Mallaiah beat BYU's Shari Smith 6-4, 6-4; Sekulov topped Boise State's Jemima Attard 6-0, 6-2 and Wagenaar beat St. Louis' Jayasree Kuryilla 6-2, 6-3. The tourney continues today.
