Doreen Sze-Sze Phang, a Kansas University senior from Malaysia, has been announced the winner of the 1998 Clark Coan Leadership Award.
Phang, a broadcast management major, received the Coan award -- which honors the international student of the year at KU -- for her leadership contributions on campus.
Her accomplishments include serving this year as president of the Malaysian Students Assn. and as a member of the Asian Awareness Alliance, a group formed last year to bring together Asian-American and international Asian students.
Daphne Johnston, interim director of international student services at KU, said Phang also helped develop a plan with administrators to provide assistance for those affected by the Asian economic crisis.
The Coan award was created upon the retirement of Clark Coan, director of the Office of Foreign Student Services for 33 years. Coan died in 1995.
