On May 31, 1898 the Lawrence World discussed ``The Population.'' regarding Douglas County, the newspaper began ``It is going to be nip and tuck to keep the census returns of the population up to the 25,000 mark. That there are that number of people in this county no one doubts but that the assessors will get them all is not so certain. ... Lawrence shows a net gain of 477 over last year. The population in the entire city is found to be 11,391 as against 10,914 last year.''
