On May 29, 1898, regarding the Spanish-American War, the Lawrence World explained: ``There are six Oklahoma candidates for Roosevelt's Rough Riders, two of whom were accepted. One of those accepted was Dick Shanafelt, who formerly worked for Tanner's Basket Factory and is well known in Lawrence.'' Mr. Shanafelt died here in Lawrence on Nov. 10, 1967.
