Senior citizens are about to get a lesson in economic self-defense.

The Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging is holding a conference on fraud against older Kansans called ``Seniors Fight Back'' on June 10.

``Information is always the best defense,'' said Maria Russo, the executive director of the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging. Understanding current scams helps people protect themselves, she said.

Russo said he expects 400 people from northeast Kansas to attend the conference at the Lawrence Holidome. It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and includes lunch for those who pre-register.

The conference includes three sessions on fraud. Karen Wittman, a staff attorney for the fraud unit of the office of the Insurance Commissioner, will discuss insurance and health-care fraud; Rick Flemming, the associate general counsel for the Office of Securities Commissioner, will discuss securities fraud; and Maria Diaz, a consumer representative for the AARP Southwest region, and Teresa Salts, a special agent supervisor in the Office of the Attorney General, consumer protection division, will discuss telemarketing fraud.

A fee will charged for registration. For more information, call (785) 235-1367.
