The Lawrence City Band will open its 1998 season June 3 at the bandstand in South Park.
``I think that is going to be the best it's ever been,'' said Robert Foster, the band's conductor. ``There's some wonderful guest conductors. ... All this is for Lawrence, and it's all free on Wednesdays.''
The band has been around since the 1960s, but there has been some form of city band for more than 100 years. The current band has 55 members, with several on a waiting list.
Concerts are at 8 p.m. Wednesdays in the William L. Kelly Bandstand in South Park. All concerts will be played weather permitting; rained-out concerts will not be rescheduled.
